Marguerite Henry was an American writer who inspired children all over the world with her love of animals, especially horses. The author of fifty-nine books based on true stories of horses and other animals, her work has captivated entire generations of children and young adults and won several Newbery Awards and Honors. Among the more famous of her works was Misty of Chincoteague, which was the basis for the 1961 movie Misty, and several sequel books. Later, this book—as well as Justin Morgan had a Horse and Brighty of the Grand Canyon—were made into movies. Mustang: Wild Spirit of the West was the Western Heritage Award winner for juvenile books in 1966, awarded in 1967. Velma "Wild Horse Annie" Bronn Johnston was an animal rights activist who co-wrote Mustang with Marguerite Henry.
Robert Lougheed was one of the prime movers in the founding of the National Academy of Art at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, and continued to serve as an advisor for many years. He also gave generously of his time as a teacher to many young painters who came to him. As a beneficiary of the legacy of Frank Vincent DuMond, Harold Von Schmidt, Sir Alfred Munning, Frederic Remington and a legion of others, Robert Lougheed felt obliged to help preserve their artistic traditions. He championed realism at a time when the mainstream of American art had lapsed increasingly into abstraction.
