Historical Sketch
The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo has been a Colorado Springs, Colorado, tradition since 1937. It showcases top rodeo talent and action, while providing wholesome entertainment for the Pikes Peak community to enjoy. Spencer Penrose, an avid sportsman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, founded the Rodeo and in 1938, presented the “House that Spec built” – the 10,000-seat Will Rogers Stadium across from the Broadmoor Hotel. The name was changed to the Spencer Penrose Stadium after his death in 1939, and the Rodeo has continued in that location under the guidance of community leaders committed to Penrose’s legacy.

Scope & Content Note

The Pikes Peaks or Bust Rodeo Programs collection contains programs, daily sheets, and newspapers pertaining to the Pikes Peak or Bust Annual Rodeo in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1948-1990, excluding 1989. The documents are divided into six sections with the largest group of materials being the Programs and Daily Sheets. Documents are arranged by format, and then chronologically.

The Daily Sheets (1948-1990) contain a schedule of daily events during the rodeo. The Newspaper Clippings (1960-1985 with most in 1970-1980) contain articles from the Gazette Daily and The Free Press, located in Colorado Springs and Grand Junction. Topics include persons of interest in the rodeo, the Colorado Springs community, or the rodeo itself.

The Notes (1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, and 1957) are loose sheets with scores and times of contestants while the Programs (1948-1988, 1990) contain information on events, performances, performers, and advertisements for the rodeo.

Finally, the collection has a souvenir pin from 1950 and there are torn ticket stubs from 1949 and 1975-1979.
