Biographical Sketch
John Santangelo lived in New Haven, Connecticut, and collected images used in Real West Magazine. The magazine began in 1957 and was discontinued in 1988 after a run of 221 regular monthly issues and 45 special issues. Real West featured stories by many well-known western authors as well as regular columns and other short features.

Scope & Content Note  

The Image Collection is comprised of 2,041 images including a small number of western themed photographs collected by John Santagelo. The majority of the collection is copy photographs used in Real West Magazine. The Collection was used as a reference tool by the National Cowboy Museum’s curatorial staff until 1998 when it was moved into the Research Center. The subject matter of the images ranges from cityscapes to death portraits.

Note to Researcher

Researchers should be advised this collection contains many images of post mortem people in various stages of decay.
